Our Summer in Tehran goes behind the traditional mainstream media headlines and explores a fascinating, yet strikingly familiar home of the "enemy."Discussant is Academy Award nominated, Emmy award-winning feature documentary filmmaker Justine Shapiro.
May 1, 2012 80' - "CHECKPOINT"
The West Bank and Gaza Strip have been under Israeli military control since 1967. Today, over three million Palestinians live under Israeli occupation. When traveling from one village or city to another to go to work, to visit relatives, or to get medical treatment, they must pass through Israeli checkpoints. These checkpoints, essentially the first points of contact between the two people, have an enormous significance in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. From 2001-2003, Director Yoav Shamir filmed at these checkpoints. A chilling look at the destructive impact of the occupation on both societies.
Discussant is Tal Palter a former member of Israeli Self-Defense Forces.
Documentary won five awards at various film festivals, including Best International Documentary at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, best feature-length documentary at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam and the Golden Gate Award for Documentary Feature at the San Francisco International Film Festival.
Co-sponsored by the Center for Middle Eastern Studies and the International House.
